 La fe secular es la fuente de nuestro cuidado unos por otros

"La fe secular - más bien que la creencia religiosa -  es la fuente

de nuestra pasión por el mundo y nuestro cuidado unos por
otros. 

Un buen lugar para comenzar es nuestra relación hacia
y dependencia de otras personas. Como (San)Agustín señala

en su tratado Fé en las Cosas Invisibles, tú nunca puedes saber 

con certeza que otra persona te ama o almacena buena voluntad
hacia ti. Tú puedes ver que ella realiza buenas acciones o 
demuestra ser una fuente de apoyo en tiempos difíciles.
Pero estos actos no proveen una garantía de que tú puedes
confiar en ella.
"Es ciertamente posible," nos recuerda Agustín, "que un hombre
nos engañe por medio de fingir amabilidad y por ocultar
malignidad. Él puede ni siquiera planear de hacer mal - pero,
de todos modos esperando alguna ventaja de ti, él simula amor
porque no lo posee."6

 Concordantemente, tú nunca puedes ver o estar seguro de su
buena voluntad hacia ti.
Más bien, confiando en él, tienes que creer en lo que no puedes
ver.

Por supuesto, ésto no significa que tú vayas a creer ciegamente
y confiar en otras personas. Pero sí significa que - aun cuando
tú hagas todo lo que puedes para conocer tanto como sea 
posible - hay un elemento irreductible de fé y confianza
entregándote a otra persona.
Aun en la relación más íntima, tienes que creer en algo que
nunca es seguro - a saber que la otra persona te ama.
Este momento de incertidumbre no puede ser eliminado puesto
que "desde tu corazón crees en un corazón que no es tuyo.7

 Agustín continúa a demostrar como la fe secular está
trabajando a través de todos los aspectos de nuestra vida,
abarcando desde la amistad hasta el matrimonio y la
paternidad, así como la vida social y comunal en general.
"Si esta fé en asuntos humanos es quitada," pregunta
Agustín, "quien no va a notar lo grande que puede ser el 
trastorno y la terrible confusión que resulta?"

"Secular faith—rather than religious belief—is the source of our 

passion for the world and our care for one another. 

A good place to start is our relation to and dependence on other 

persons. As Augustine points out in his treatise Faith in Things 

Unseen, you can never know for certain that another person 

loves you or harbors good will toward you. 

You may see that he performs good deeds or proves himself to 

be a source of support in difficult times. 

But these acts provide no guarantee that you can trust him. 

“It certainly is possible,” Augustine reminds us, 

“for a man to deceive by feigning kindness and by cloaking 

malice. He may not even plan to do harm—still, by 

expecting some advantage from you, he simulates love 

because he does not possess it.”6 

Accordingly, you can never see or be certain of his goodwill 

toward you. Rather, in trusting him, you have to believe in what 

you cannot see. 

Of course, this does not mean that you should blindly trust and 

believe in other people. But it does mean that—even 

when you do everything you can to know as much as possible

—there is an irreducible element of faith and trust in 

giving yourself over to another person. Even in the most 

intimate relation, you have to believe in something that is 

never certain—namely that the other person loves you. 

This moment of uncertainty cannot be eliminated, since 

“out of your heart you believe in a heart that is not yours.”7 

Augustine proceeds to demonstrate how secular faith is 

at work throughout all aspects of our lives, ranging from 

friendship to marriage and parenthood, as well as social 

and communal life at large. “If this faith in human affairs is 

removed,” Augustine asks, “who will not mark how great 

will be their disorder and what dreadful confusion will follow?”
